We
had a wild evening at Saturday night’s Live
at The Cup with John Troy.
He certainly ended the year’s entertainment with a bang.
It was a small crowd and we felt selfish but special having John to
ourselves for such a personal performance. John was
on a roll and we laughed the entire evening away, very therapeutic
without the cost of a session. In between the funny stories you realize
what an amazing talent John is with his vocal
quality and range. It was a pleasure to hear him sing. Truly amazing,
you
can’t get enough of his vocals. I am still humming ‘Arizona’ in
my head. |

Well Saturday
night was perfect at The Cup with Brook
Ramel’s Holiday concert. The air was crisp, filled
with the scents of Chai spices, gingerbread, and fresh baked cookies.
The heaters kept us toasty while the steam wafted from our mugs
filled with drinks of all kinds. Angelic tunes floated around the
atrium as we sang along with those wonderfully familiar holiday
favorites. It was a special evening with Lulu in
the audience just turning one. Couples were snuggled together and
families sang as if in a choir.
Yes, it was truly a special
evening with warm smiles and hearts. But we are not ready to
end the year yet. We all get to eat and celebrate the holidays
but have a chance to wear off those calories on Friday with Swing
dancing hosted by Alec. Then before we can bid
goodbye to 2008 we have one more special entertainer to enjoy. John
Troy will be with us on Dec 27th and you won’t
want to miss that!

We had a great time
during Live at The Cup Saturday
night. The heaters were going so we kept warm. Not to mention Alec
Marken and Deep Stirrings heating up the evening with lots
of great energy and music. Alec had fun playing
with the audience and you could tell the band was having a great
time too. The eclectic combination of tunes had something for everyone.
The band has changed their style a little and is sounding fantastic.
So if you missed Alec this time around, I recommend
catching him on his next appearance. |

Live
at The Cup on
Saturday featured SWAY with their shinny new
look and as fantastic as always. Gina and Perry were
center stage as they welcomed back Pat on bass, Scott on
electric guitar and Nate on drums. It was impossible
to leave without feeling anything but absolutely fabulous! The
rhythm was contagious and you knew they are having a great time
as they were singing. It was like one big party. We kept smiling
all evening as we sang along and kept swaying with SWAY. |

Live
at The Cup was
a great way to top off the holiday with the happy and soulful
sounds of Jason Luckett. I love the stories
he shares. In fact, his set list was tossed right out the window
as he just let his stories dictate the tunes to be played. We
just followed the flow of the conversation. Jason is
so much fun to listen to, with an amazing amount of energy.
Of course he has that million dollar smile, but I kept visualizing
the perfect new album cover… a cropped shot of the mic
stand, guitar in its stand, pointed down at his tennis shoes.
Talk about happy feet! It just looked so L.A. with the old
fashion black tennis shoes with the white laces. I still say Jason should
call the Mayor and submit his song ‘Good
Day in LA’ as the city’s theme song. It is fantastic.
But how can you feel anything but fabulous when you end the
evening with Jason singing ‘Miracle’.
What a wonderful holiday weekend! |

Saturday’s
Live at The Cup was
another toe tapper. Wilfax entertained
with Willy and Jeff, Southern
California guys providing a great sound. We just loved the unique
way they make
those guitars sing, absolutely amazing talents. It was funny because
I thought Willy looked familiar then realized
he looks like my cousin Stewart in Ohio. How funny!
But none of my relatives can play the guitar like that. It was
a lot of fun that night with two birthdays in the audience being
celebrated.
What a great way to spend the evening. |

I
don’t think
you could ask for a better evening than with Rendezvous.
The house was crowded with eager music lovers with many reporting
back that they had a wonderful evening and could not get over how
great Shauna and Johnny are.
But we already know that, don’t we. They are FANTASTIC! Some
new songs, a beautiful job on the songs we are familiar hearing
and lots
of great musical vibe!! |

It was great to
have Chris Thayer back at The
Cup. It’s nice to have such great talent
appearing and even better when they are like one of the family. Chris was
definitely on top of his game! He makes it look so easy and the sound
is so comforting. We were treated to old tunes as well as new ones.
After a short break Chris was joined by Quinton on
the drums and Mark on bass guitar. When Chris broke
out the electric guitar…high energy followed with a beat that
moved the crowd. It was fun sitting towards the back watching heads
bob and toes tap. In fact the music was so moving there was dancing
in the back. Smooth, very smooth. You couldn’t help but have
fun when Chris, Quinton and Mark were
having such a good time playing their music. Thanks guys! |

So
how was Saturday night’s Live at The Cup?
It was great! The rain was falling but we stayed dry under the covered
atrium. It was very peaceful listening to John Troy while
the rain just lightly fell in the background. What an atmosphere. John is
a wonderful guitarist with a fantastic voice and personality to match.
We laughed so hard as John told us so many funny,
funny stories. His has such a pure sound; he doesn’t really
need to be accompanied by a musical instrument at all, but he is
accomplished with that as well. As I listened to the music, I found
myself watching his chiseled face as he was intently focused on the
moment of the song. What a treat, simply mesmerizing. If you missed
his performance this time, you will want to keep an eye on our calendar
and save the date when he appears next. It’s a must. |

What
an active crowd on Saturday night. Alec Marken & Deep
Stirrings was
entertaining to a full house. There was a lot of singing, dancing
and fun in the house. As always Alec and his group
provided a wide variety of tunes and styles. We never know what’s
coming next but it sure does keep you on your toes! And if you
missed Alec during Live at The Cup,
catch him on most Friday evenings for Swing Dance lessons
at The Cup. |

Saturday
evening during Live at The Cup was
absolutely insane. But what can you expect from Losers
Like Us. We had a great crowd and laughed all evening
while Cliff, Bill and Dave sang
their crazy lyrics. So you had to be listening to catch a little
country, a little blues and a little pirate thrown in. Trust me;
you had to be there…it was great! |

My
favorite part of the week, Saturday night Live
at The Cup. It was music’s version of
comfort food. We felt absolutely wonderful while we listened to Rendezvous.
Perfection in balance, blend and so in sync with each other, the
quality was something to experience. Wistful tunes, wispy breezes
and a full moon. The weather was changing from summer to autumn
right before our eyes. The crowd was filled with family and friends,
growing
with each of Shauna and Johnny’s performances.
Everyone was clapping, tapping and singing to the tunes. And when
they broke out into a song from America, my sister-in-law Jeanne
and I chuckled because we both remembered those times in high school,
sitting in front of the Lakewood house, singing the same songs.
It was an awesome evening. Thank you, Shauna and Johnny,
you warm and fill our hearts. |

John
Tolley wrote and sang a special song in honor of Scott at
our 'Open Mic Night'. The song was titled ‘The
Ones Who’ve Loved You’. It was absolutely beautiful
and we thank John for the honor and his talents.
We had such
a fun Saturday night with lots of diversity. There was a scheduling
glitch and
our featured performers were not available at 8pm. But never
fear, a few performers from Open Mic Night came
to the rescue. It was casual, fun and as always, you can count
on
entertainers to pitch in, sing and draw the crowd together. It
was certainly our pleasure to be treated to the sounds of Paul
Hines, John
Carrillo and Michael
Edward.
SAS and Marliese entertained
for the second half of the evening so we had a full house of
artists each with their unique styles. It was a treat for each
to share their talents.

Saturday night we
were entertained by Shipwreck Town who featured
songs from their newest CD ‘Light in the Sky’. The
group had added Daniel Blank playing the violin. What
a marvelous touch, absolutely loved it. You can tell the group enjoyed
playing as we watched their smiles and passion. |

I missed Jason
Luckett last Saturday and I can't wait until his next
appearance at The Cup. This Saturday's crowd was still talking
about his performance and how special it was. There is something
about Jason's personality that
just sparkles. Add to that his fantastic talent, well, no wonder
they are all still talking about it.
This Saturday we were treated
to the music of Angel Smythe along with Randy-guitar/vocals, David-guitar,
and Abel-Cajon. I never saw the instrument called
a Cajon and had no idea what it was but loved the sound. It is
a kind of box drum played by slapping the front face with the
hands and is the most widely used Afro-Peruvian musical instrument
in the 20th century. In Cuba, the Cajon is associated with the
drum/song/dance style known as rumba.
Angel had
such a positive, energizing and comfortable style, you felt so
welcomed listening to her beautiful songs. It was an interesting
experience as she has such a centered, quiet sense about her,
making it easy to be surrounded by the music. What a peaceful
charm. There was lots of great music, stories about family, friends
and travels. Angel is going to Nashville and
we wish her luck. Hurry back!

Well,
after a day of heat it was nice to sit, relax and enjoy the cool
evening breeze
listening to the music of Brooke Ramel. What could
be better? And Lulu was in the house (Brooke's daughter). Lulu
sure is growing and what a charming little personality and smile.
It always
makes our night special when Brooke sings in French.
Her version of 'La Vie En Rose' is so peaceful. In my mind, we
are there in Paris with Gene Kelley. Is it possible to transport
the
entire coffeehouse like that? Now that's magic! What an easy evening
with Brooke chatting with us all while singing
everyone's favorites. It's simply magical the way her music lets
your mind be
hugged with happy memories. I could picture my Dad sitting next
to me at The Cup, feeling him smile and enjoying one of his favorite
singers. Many happy memories...Thank you Brooke. |

Saturday night's
entertainment was so exciting with Johnny Angel & Shauna
Dee of Rendezvous. We love when they appear
at The Cup with their amazing sound.
The two harmonize so wonderfully, as they take us on a journey through
time and tunes. Being so polished it seems as tough they have been
together for a long time, but it has only been for about a year.
They have such a great variety of songs, both originals and covers;
the crowd loves to sing along. And we had a great crowd. Not only
was the singing fantastic, but Johnny plays a mean
guitar and Shauna adds the special touches with
a wide assortment of musical toys. It is always fun to see what
she is going to add next. Their harmony on 'Somewhere over the
Rainbow’ always
brings tears to my eyes, so beautiful. The evening flew by and
we wanted more. We absolutely love them and can't wait until their
return.
We are keeping our fingers crossed for a CD in the future. |

What a great holiday
weekend. I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July. Open Mic night
was packed with 15 performers and a house full of audience supporters
cheering them on. Saturday Night Live introduced Dream’s
debut performance at The Cup.
What an appropriate name. Their sound is enchanting taking you
on a journey of imagination. One from which you won’t want
to awaken. Their music had a mystical quality, a flavor of Carnival.
I had the feeling I took a trip to Rio de Janeiro. |

What
a show during Saturday’s Live
at The Cup! John Troy was
our entertainer and it was a unique evening. It was one of those
moments that I believe cosmic events align. I am sure everyone
heard of George Carlin’s passing and I heard on the radio
that his services were Saturday. That same evening, while watching John’s
performance it was striking how similar the two entertainers are. John’s
lyrics had that same sharp wit with social commentary and a wonderful
sense of humor. He has a serious look on a chiseled face, so it
catches you off guard (if you never heard his music) when he breaks
out with
unexpected humor. John’s stories had us
all laughing. Yet the quality of his voice is amazing and unparalleled.
We were treated to lots of personal stories of John’s
long time friend Willie Buchanon (NFL defensive & 1972
rookie of the year with the Green Bay Packers) who joined us in
the audience. You could tell it was a fun evening for John and
for all of us as well. |

What a great Saturday
evening with SWAY and their CD release party! Losers
Like Us were sensational and warmed up a fantastic crowd.
Then SWAY entertained bringing down the house.
There was music, raffles, dancing, food, cake and a whole lot of
FUN. I
couldn’t get enough and played my CD all the way home. Love
it, love it love it. Their newly released CD 'Let It Roll' is available
for purchase at The Cup. |

I
could try to describe Jenn
Grinels’ performance Saturday night at Live
at The Cup, but it wouldn’t do it justice.
The energy was contagious and the 2 hours just few by. It had
been awhile since Jenn’s
last visit with us because she just returned from a 27 State
tour. Now that’s busy! It started out as a fun evening
when Jenn decided
to have a cozy atmosphere and moved the tables in the atrium
that Steve had
arranged. Now, that may not seem like much to you, however, being Steve’s sister
(Diane), I knew this to be a bold and daring move. With
a chuckle in my eye I looked over to Steve and
he took it very well. He did razz Jenn a bit
during the intro, but you have to love a strong woman. And strong
she
is with her amazing talent and personality. She makes it all
look so easy as she belts out those songs with such a quality
sound.
It was an amazing evening of music. |

What
a great turn out for Carolyn Miller's performance
at Live
at The Cup on Saturday night. Some of Carolyn's 5th
grade students filled the audience and energized the evening. What
a treat from them to experience their teacher's beautiful voice.
I know it is always a treat for us. Her voice is wonderful with
its melodic vibrato that has a powerful quality. We enjoyed her
humorous
stories and rapport with the crowd. Carolyn is
moving to Nashville. We will miss her and hope she comes back to
visit soon. |

It was great fun
having Chris Thayer back at The
Cup. Chris has been so busy it
had been awhile since his last appearance. His music was as fantastic
as we remembered and it was a treat to hear him perform again. It
was a lazy warm evening and as we waited for the breeze, it was a
delight to listen to the smooth sounds from Chris' repertoire. Chris had
a powerful sound that balanced so well with the soulful rhythms.
But not to get too comfy in the cool of the eve, because Chris changed
it up and got the beat going. And he threw a bit of Blues into
the mix as well. We loved the new microphone with the blue light
too. Great sounds, great night, Thanks Chris! |

Last
night was the 1st appearance for Pete Sallis at
Saturday's Live
at The Cup and it was our treat. Pete is
a song writer from Nashville and we loved his songs, voice and
lyrics. He kept taking out original songs, one after another, that
were amazing.
My favorite was 'Small Towns' which is a song I could listen to
every day on my drive home from work. It takes you back to a simpler
time,
good old Southern comfort. It was so exciting to hear about the
cuts that various artists are making from his songs. I can't wait
to hear
about Pete's continued success the next time he
appears at The Cup. Pete was
joined by special appearances from John, Melissa and Francis.
It was a great time had by all. |

MAGIC,
PURE MAGIC...
The Cup will
be starting a series about Tips on Living and
the 1st session will help you with stress management. But
Saturday night's Live at The
Cup gave
me a head start on washing away my entire week's tension.
I think this was the 1st time in almost 3 years of Saturday
evening
performances where my brother Steve actually
sat down beside me, had a bite to eat and relaxed. He is
such a busy guy. We listened to the smooth and balanced sounds
of Rendezvous featuring Johnny
Angel and Shauna Dee. Their music is just plain
good for the soul. It was a special moment. Hearing 'One
More Time' took me on a walk down memory lane remembering
how brave my parents were to pack the 3 of us kids (Sue, Steve and
myself (Diane)) in the blue station wagon
for a trip to New York. There are things you always remember,
like how important it is in the summer to drive through the
city of Needles at night! I could tell by the smiles in the
audience, everyone was experiencing great memories and enjoying
the evening. Steve and I looked at each
other in shock when Shauna introduced the
song 'Cruizin
for Bruizin'. We didn't know there was actually a song
by that name! Oh my gosh, our Dad use to
say that when we were heading for trouble. We could hear
him saying..."you're
cruizin for a bruizin." Steve and I
looked at each other and laughed. Thanks Rendezvous,
for making our hearts smile. |

Saturday
evening began with the Jewelry Fair and Mother’s
Day benefit. We had so many terrific vendors selling
beautiful items. In addition, we were entertained throughout the
event by SWAY, SAS, Angel
Smythe and Kahlid Woods each performing
for half hour sessions. This is a very worthy cause since a piece
of jewelry from each vendor and a portion of all proceeds will
be donated to Ashland Home a local women’s
shelter, for victims of domestic violence. So if you did not have
a chance to attend, please join us again on May 10th and help us
make Mother’s Day special for everyone.
Angle
Smythe also appeared at Live
at The Cup with a full band and they were awesome!
There were lots of people to join in the fun and Angel will
be back again in August. Stay tuned because you don’t
want to miss her.

After
a day of marathon cooking for Passover I took a well deserved break
to listen to Jason Luckett who was back at The
Cup Saturday night. He charmed us with his million
dollar smile and personality. I love the stories he tells as he
chats between songs and makes us all feel we are friends gathering
to spend some time together. It's fascinating watching him play
the guitar. He makes it seem so effortless as his fingers skip
over the strings. We went on a journey through the night, with
smiles and chuckles as Jason sang some of our
favorites like 'Stack of 45s' and 'Good Day in LA', which just
made you feel good inside. We took a vote and truly believe the
Mayor of LA should adopt Jason's song to be the
theme song of Los Angeles. It's absolutely fabulous. Jason will
be going to New Hampshire in a couple of weeks and be on a road
tour for a couple of months. We wish him well and can't wait until
he returns. |

What
a great evening at Live at The Cup Saturday
night. SWAY with Gina, Perry, Lawrence
and Trevor was a blast. Love it, Love it, Love
it, what a beat, what a sound! There is no other group like SWAY.
There was a large crowd but Gina and
the group made it feel so quaint, just 60 or so of your closest
friends. The music and atmosphere was so much fun. I love the weekends
because I get to catch up with family and meet new friends like
Linda and Russ. The energy was contagious. SWAY has
so much going on we have to keep an eye on them because they are
really going places. They are doing great in the Nashville
Star competition and have been called back for
a personal audition. Stay tuned for updates on that. Also, SWAY will
be having a record release party at The
Cup on June 21st and you are invited. All you
have to bring is yourself and a love of music…and good times of
course. You don’t want to miss this group. They have a
sound that is so balanced and rich; we know they are going to
go far.
Hopefully always returning to The
Cup. |

Saturday
night during Live at The Cup was
a little chilly but you could never tell with the music of Alec
Marken & Deep Stirrings. Their name definitely fit
the style especially with the Bass. Now that is an awesome string
instrument. As always Alec treated us to additional
instrumentation in his band. He introduced us to David on
drums, Shafi on vocals, Chris on
the Bass, Marcus on guitar and Henry on
keyboard. It was a full house and a wonderful evening of entertainment. |

Joel
Ackerson is back on tour again and just out of the studio
when he appear at The Cup on
Saturday night. He apologized for his voice sounding tired but
to us it sounded deep and sexy. No need to apologize for that,
right ladies? We love when Joel sings and
shares stories about his songs and life experiences. It was
great fun
and can’t wait until the next time Joel appears
at The Cup. |

Yvonne
Perea was entertaining at The
Cup this weekend. It
was a small, cozy gathering due to the holiday. The weather
was perfect
and we didn’t need any heaters. The ambiance was like
a family party, giving it a personal touch with Yvonne singing
as we chatted together. She just came back from two months
in New Mexico and we were so happy to have her back with us.
We
love when Yvonne sings those blues! Her new
song ‘Hardest Days of Grey’ debuted at The
Cup,
which was a big hit and we were honored. It was a pleasure
to hear Yvonne sing.
In case you had a hectic week, this was the perfect remedy. Yvonne’s
music makes your heart feel good. Now, bring on the new week’s
challenges! |

There
was lots of energy in the audience Saturday night. Kahlid
Woods entertained the crowd and was joined by Mike
Cleveland on sax. It’s always amazing to listen
to Kahlid’s deep, resonating voice, Wow.
Kind of grabs you by the bootstraps. Carlos also
made a surprise appearance. As members from Liqdzunshine joined
in, it was as if we were experiencing a reunion. Lots of energy,
lots of friends and lots of FUN. |

Saturday
night was a treat with Brooke Ramel returning
after bringing her new daughter into the world. We welcomed LuLu
to The CUP who happens
to share the same birthday with Steve, December
29th. How fun is that?
Brooke sounded
as magnificent as ever and introduced us to some of the songs
on her new CD, Lullaby, just released (I know it’s fabulous
because I listened to mine all the way home). We were treated
to those special stories Brooke shares when
she appears. Motherhood has added extra depth to an already fantastic
personality.
A cute side-note
to the evening…Brooke has never worn tennis shoes while
appearing, but alerted us to the fact that she made an executive
decision to do so this evening. We did get a quote from our famous
celebrity…”It’s hard to have fun when your
feet hurt”. And we had lots of fun!

We
had the most amazing Saturday evening with Bernard Parnham from
NBC’s Nashville Star, auditioning so many
talented performers. There were 28 performances in the 3 hours.
Nashville Star has
had five seasons and this summer is moving to NBC. Bernard shared
his reservations in finding true stars for Nashville in California
and has been scouting and holding auditions throughout the state.
We were not surprised when he told us the performers he heard at The
CUP last night were the best pool of entertainers
he had heard by far. And any reservations he had about California
were blown away. We knew the talent that appears at The
CUP is truly amazing
and now the country will know it as well. So stay tuned as we keep
track of the competition. We will keep you updated in our newsletter.
Here’s

Saturday
night was all about experiencing the music and the crowd. It was
another packed audience listening to the diverse sounds of Alec
Marken and Deep Stirrings. There was standing room only
which accommodated those that were dancing to the music. This
was Alec’s largest band ever, accompanied by Shafi, Tommy,
Henry, Warren, David and Rob. The band not only presented their
vocal
talents but also treated us to flavors from the guitar, keyboard,
drums, sax, flutes, and violin. On top of that, we had an amazing
musical journey from Ireland, to New York, Africa and many other
exotic locations. It was a great night. |

Another
fantastic Open Mic Night, I hope you didn’t
miss it. If you did, you will want to save some future dates because
this is a Must-Do for your list. There is always a wonderful variety
of entertainers and it’s just a good time for all. So save
the 1st Saturday of each month to stop by and set a spell. We also had
an amazing time experiencing the performance of Jason
Luckett. What a smile and the joy he sings with, contagious.
This was Jason’s 2nd appearance at The
Cup and a great
way to start the year. Fantastically smooth rhythm reminiscent
of ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’.
With Jason’s
Mom and Sister in the audience he shared conversations and stories
behind the music. We were treated to one of my favorites ‘Stack
of 45s’. His song, ‘Democracy at the Point of a Gun’ is
in the new short movie ’68 and Clear’, at the film
festival. Way to go Jason! He certainly got the crowd going as
we joined a sing along. I don’t think my foot stopped tapping.
And I believe I saw folks moving their hips as they sauntered
to their cars at the end of the evening. Now that was a cute
sight.
