Bubby Annie’s Applesauce

In honor of apple picking season in September and National Apple Month.

If you have never done this before, it is a must to take the family, pick apples and have a great time. They have many activities as well. A site to the orchards Diane goes to is Riley's at Los Rios Rancho in Oak Glen, CA. Beginning Labor Day weekend, U-Pick apples is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4 pm.

Now that you have all those apples, here is a recipe for applesauce from my Bubby (Jewish Grandmother) Annie. We would go to Plow Boys Market in Hawaiian Gardens (the store is no longer there) and she would buy a huge box filled with apples that had a small nick or bruise, for only $1. Yes, the whole 24” square box for only $1! We would lay out newspaper on the table and start peeling the apples. It was fun to see her use a knife and go around the entire apple making one continuous ribbon of apple peel without breaking it. A goal each child would strive to achieve. Making applesauce is a great activity to build your own family memory, whether you pick the apples or buy them.

Bubby Annie’s Applesauce
There is no specific amount or apples. Use whatever quantity you have. Peel the apples and put them in a pot covered with water and the juice of one lemon if they are going to sit before coring, so they won’t turn brown.

Core the apples using a knife or apple corer. Remove any bruised areas. Cut into large chunks or thick slices. Uniformity is not important here.

Put apple chunks in a big heavy stock pot with 1 inch of water. No Sugar is necessary.

Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally until the apples are cooked through and fork tender. When the apples are soft you can add cinnamon to taste if desired.

If you like chunky applesauce, you are done.

If you like it smooth, you can run it through a Food Mill or mash it with a potato masher. I like it chunky.
You can jar or freeze the applesauce but if it turns out as wonderful as my Bubby’s it just won’t last. I liked it warm or cold all on its own. I also suggest trying it hot with a scoop of ice cream. It is great served with pork for dinner, or send a little container filled with this treat in a lunchbox.
